Why Thirroul roofs wear out faster than the rest of the coast

Thirroul sits in a pincer that almost no other Illawarra suburb does: the surf throws salt at the roof from the east, and the escarpment funnels cold, fast katabatic gusts down onto it from the west. Standard-grade Colorbond and ordinary tile fixings are rated for one of those, not both at once. We see roofs here that look a decade older than their birth certificate, with fasteners weeping rust and ridge mortar shaken loose years ahead of schedule.

That is why, within the surf zone here, we quote marine or ultra-grade steel by default, stainless fasteners, and a flexible pointing compound that moves with the wind instead of cracking against it. It costs a little more on day one and saves a full repair cycle over the life of the roof. The owners of the beach cottage two streets back from the break, whose sixty-year-old terracotta we converted to ultra-grade Colorbond, have stayed dry through every east coast low since.

The other Thirroul trap is the original beach cottage that has been added onto twice. The joins between the old roof and the newer extensions are where the valleys hide, and a rusted valley under a later addition is the leak that three other roofers miss. We trace those from inside the cavity, not just from the ridge.
